Is life insurance halal?
Conventional life insurance is widely ruled impermissible (gharar + riba in the float); takaful — mutual protection pools — is the designed-compliant alternative, and necessity-based exceptions are recognized by some scholars.
The objections: you pay premiums against an uncertain payout (trading in pure uncertainty), and insurers invest the float in interest instruments. Term life draws somewhat softer treatment than whole/universal life, whose 'cash value' grows at declared interest — the investment component makes those clearly problematic.
Takaful restructures the arrangement as mutual donation: participants contribute to a shared pool, claims are paid from it, surpluses can be returned, and the pool invests in screened assets. Where takaful isn't available and dependents need protection, several contemporary boards permit basic term life under necessity — the position many practicing families in the West rely on.
The conditions that matter
- Prefer takaful where available
- If relying on the necessity view: basic term life only, no cash-value products

Is employer-provided group life insurance ok?
Generally treated leniently — it's a compensation benefit you don't separately contract or pay for. Supplemental voluntary coverage brings back the standard analysis.
Is whole life or universal life halal?
These are the hardest to justify: the savings component earns interest by design. The compliant pattern is 'buy term (or takaful) and invest the difference' in screened assets.
