Is venture capital halal?

Permissible With Conditions

VC's structure — equity risk capital sharing profit and loss — is naturally compliant; the screening questions are the portfolio companies' businesses and any fund-level leverage.

Of all institutional asset classes, venture maps most cleanly onto fiqh partnership principles: capital genuinely at risk, no guaranteed return, gains from enterprise growth. Early-stage companies also tend to carry little conventional debt, easing the ratio screens.

The diligence points: portfolio company activities (fintech-lending startups, alcohol delivery, gambling apps fail), fund credit facilities used to juice returns, and preferred-share terms that guarantee returns regardless of outcome (which mimic debt).

The conditions that matter

  • Portfolio companies' core activities permissible
  • No guaranteed-return share structures
  • Watch fund-level subscription credit lines

FAQ

Can I invest in VC as a non-accredited investor?

Mostly via equity crowdfunding (same screening logic) or public proxies. The fiqh doesn't change with the access route.
